Just to provide another scenario on this that's already been mentioned to Juju folks but is helpful on the record here, we're having the same issue with deploying Livepatch server. Interestingly compared to Guillermo's situation above, we're seeing this on `juju upgrade-charm` with an absolute path to the charm. The output was:

juju upgrade-charm --path /srv/mojo/mojo-prod-livepatch-juju2/xenial/production/charms/xenial/livepatch-server livepatch-server
Added local charm "livepatch-server", revision 44, to the model
ERROR missing base name or channel not valid (not valid)
