Glad you made progress and sorry you ran into those issues. The fix to pick a better default flavour (one with 1GB RAM) on Openstack, as well as support for Openstack with multiple networks have already been committed and will be included in the next Juju release, 1.18. We hope to have that out within a week or so (ASAP). 1.18 also fixes usability issues with custom image metadata and makes the process much easier.
