I think something more flexible and more intuitive within the current design is to loop by stretch, in the sense that... A user would import an audio clip and then if you stretch a complete audio clip, it would seamlessly paste another clip for the length of the stretch. If you wanted something to loop 24 times, you'd stretch an audio clip 24 times its length (markers could be in place to note where a new loop begins)
You have something like this in Sony Acid.
