So not being in the panel could either mean that it didn't find any necessary driver, or that it crashed. If it doesn't run from the menu either, it rather sounds like a crash. Can you please attempt to run it, confirm that it crashes (or, generally, disappears), and then attach ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/
