Are you using GNOME or KDE? (I. e. Ubuntu or Kubuntu?) Did you see the window which asked you for authentication?

I am running gnome, and the authentication window crashes. It won't let me
enter my password when attempting to install the nvidia proprietary driver.
Once the authentication window crashes, the Hardware Drivers window stops
responding

Can you please describe (or do screenshots) of the crashing authentication windows? What do you see and do exactly? Can you please do

  sudo force_start=1 /etc/init.d/apport start

reproduce the situation, and check if you get a crash report? If so, please file it. If not, please attach /var/log/apport.log.

Thank you!

I will run apport when I get home. In brief, when I attempt to activate the
Nvidia driver, the authentication dialog opens prompting me to enter my
password. That dialog box freezes. I cannot enter my password (I've let it
sit over night) and have to force quit the authentication box.
