If I hadn't, how would I know that the output didn't go anywhere? It's not particularly helpful to reply with "works for me" without any information about how to verify how it works. Where does the output go? To the syslog? To the terminal?

OS X applications run from the UI don't connect to a terminal session so it's not clear where the output would be sent. Running the older X11 versions doesn't do much good, as running from the Terminal doesn't pick up all the UI elements.
