Bug Description

Binary package hint: inkscape

I installed Inkscape for the first time on Ubuntu 11.04 and I see that the main toolbar and the toolbar for sticking lines and segments where on the right side (later noticed the "wide" and "standard" views).

1) I tried to move the main toolbar and it worked like expected in vertical mode. I could however not dock the toolbar on top, horizontally.

2) When I tried to move the other toolbar it would not dock anywhere, not even where it was at the beginning.

Hi Tim,

Thanks a lot for reporting this. I've attempted to reproduce this bug on
my own 11.04 system and have myself not been able to dock the toolbars,
but I'm not completely sure about it is you're trying to report.

Could you please provide a step-by-step guide, providing as much detail
as possible, explaining how to reproduce this bug?

Thanks,
Chris

Well, now (second start) it seems to work like it should where "wide" and "standard" works mostly like expected.

1) This time however the docking was very "hard" and it took precision positioning for it to dock.
2) Another thing I noticed was that it still was hard to get the toolbars to rotate, which worked some times on first run.

Duplicate of or related to bug #390446 “Impossible to add toolbar back in dock after freeing it”?

You cannot rotate or freely rearrange the toolbars (e.g. place them on one row) - afaiu this is a limitiation of GTK+.
In Inkscape 0.48, you can now choose between three different arrangements (menu 'View' -> Default|Custom|Wide). [1]

If you detached some toolbars and then changed the arrangement while one of the toolbars is still floating, the floating toolbar might change the layout of the icons, but not resize. In such a case either close the toolbar with your window manager commands or open a new window: this will automatically reattach the toolbars in the proper locations.

Please clarify for upstream report: What exactly got confirmed?

The bug as originally reported, is not a bug:
1) Inkscape's toolbars are not and never have been freely relocatable nor rotatable. To change the toolbar layout, choose between the three layouts at the bottom of the 'View' menu (part of 'Adoaptive UI', new in 0.48, WIP).
2) Difficulties reattaching a detached toolbar are already tracked in bug #390446 (it does work, but the area to drop the toolbar is very small and can be difficult to detect. Toolbars can only be reattached to their original position).

The remaining UI issue AFAICT is about unexpected behavior (fixed size of detached toolbars):
3) Detached toolbars keep the same size they had while attached to the their main window. They are not being automatically resized (width and height swapped) when changing the layout of the toolbars via menu 'View'.

Either this report should be marked as duplicate of bug #390446 or bug importance lowered to 'Low': Issue 3 does not describe a permanent state: toolbars default to being attached to the main window, and the detached state is not stored - neither for the current session nor across sessions: duplicate the window (menu 'View), or open a new document -> the toolbars are docked again and correctly positioned according to the chosen layout.

Tear-off toolbars are no longer provided since lp:inkscape r12027 because the GtkHandleBox widget is now deprecated (see bug #1096350).
