Bug Description

Once a toolbar is free (not docked), it is impossible to add it back in the dock, even if you play with it over the docking area. It may be because to somehow force them in place.

Tested in KDE4 and AwesomeWM

I am having the same issue. I undocked the Layers toolbar, and I am now unable to re-dock it. I can iconify it, but that's not really what I'm trying to do. I thought that I should be able to add it back to the dock by simply dragging it back to it's home, but that's not working. Please let me know if there is something else I should be trying.

I am having this issue in version .47 on Windows Vista.
My husband is also having this issue with version .47 on Linux Mint.

Never mind. I figured it out. You need to place the cursor in the gray area while dragging. I had the cursor in the top blue area instead.

I have the same problem, with the "Align and distribute" panel. that I undocked by accident. The toolbars work fine, though.

It does not "work" toolbars can only be reattached where they were detached at a pixel perfect position only. To truly solve this bug, it need to work right / as expected, not just allow you to undo the accidental move.

An other workaround is to switch from widescreen mode to normal mode and back (or the opposite). This feature would be useless if the toolbars were able to move correctly like other apps.

Not reproduced on Ubuntu 10.04, Inkscape 0.47 and 0.48.
Toolbars can only be reattached to their original position, but don't need a pixel perfect position.

How is it supposed to work? Where do I need to drag a floating toolbar to make it dock ?
Maybe this is windows manager dependent? I am using metacity with focus follow mouse and inkscape 0.48.

I have the same problem cannot re-dock the "Snap Controls Bar" on "Inkscape 0.48.0 r9654" on Ubuntu 10.10.

In fact the toolbar was showing up as a separate window in my window list (i.e. the list of open windows in Ubuntu's panel).

The panel redocked when I right-clicked on the window list entry and selected close.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and Inkscape 0.48. It works every time as expected. Make sure that you move the mouse cursor just BELOW window bar (when it changes into a hand) before you start dragging it.

That's my first post at launchpad. Hope I was helpful. ;-)

The problem persists on a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 and using Inkscape 0.48.1. Also affected me on earlier versions. I can also confirm that the control bar re-docks itself when manually closing the floating control bar window.

I though I had the same problem, but after reading Slawomir's explanation I find that it's more a problem of the interface not behaving as the user expects, rather than the functionality being broken.

Indeed, when moving the window by dragging the frame it's not possible to redock it again (or I've been unable to do it). However, when I moving by dragging using the gray area just below, it's possible do it everytime without any problem.

Please see attached screenshot for a more descriptive explanation.

As a workaround to move docking windows (e.g. the layers palette) back into the docking area you can:

mv ~/.config/inkscape/preferences.xml ~/.config/inkscape/preferences-old.xml

I'm currently using the OS X version of Inkscape 0.48.5. When I drag a toolbar out from it's default position it creates a floating window. If I just close the floating window, the toolbar goes back to it's default position.
