With all of the recent changes in trunk, the mesh gradient feature will get it's own tool. That tool will also support conical gradients (done by mesh) and possibly other types.

When dealing with colocated stops, if the stop selector seems cumbersome to you. I'd say it makes sense to get used to the Tab and Shift+Tab shortcuts to toggle between stops if you want a quick workflow.
