Bug Description

I am using Inkscape 0.48 and Ubuntu 10.04 TLS.

The connector tool is only capable of making two kinds of orthogonal connections. Follow this scenario:

- Create a rectangle. We shall refer to the sides of the rectangle as, Top, Bottom, Left and Right.
- Now create connector that connects the center of this rectangle that goes out from the Left side and down. This is possible.
- Now create a connector that goes from the center of the rectangle and through the bottom side, depending on your angle it may give you a Right-Bottom connector, or on very rare and odd configuration you will get a Top-Left connector.
- Trying to create a connector that goes out the Left side of the rectangle an Down is impossible. Even free drawing a connector that is Top-Left oriented (wrt to a rectangle) is impossible.

Basically, you are only able to create two kinds of connectors but not their respective mirror copies.

Furthermore, when creating a connector that goes from the center of a rectangle out to the Left side, the connector is overlayed on top of the rectangle. Dragging that same connector end point back to right side, makes the connector invisible under that rectangle.

In short, the connector tool is virtually useless as it is, since you have only half-capability of the tool.

That's a regression in Inkscape 0.48.0, fixed for 0.48.1, see bug #591586 “[connectors] 'z' segments closing a path are ignored”.

The connectors are not 'under' the object they are connected to (in the sense of stack order) - the connectors are rendered so that they start at the edge of the connected object and do not overlap.

«Connectors are drawn so they begin on the edge of the attached object. »

Confirmed - the orthogonal connectors created with Inkscape 0.48.0, 0.48.1 and 0.48+devel r10039 on OS X 10.5.8 however seem to be mirrored in the available routes compared to your description (unless I misunderstood your directions) - see attached file, using a circle to avoid any (known and fixed) bugs with straight closing edges.
