Bug Description

(Forwarded from Debian: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=538351)

Version: inkscape_0.48.0-1ubuntu2

The attached EPS file is imported correctly into Inkscape. However, the zoom is set too low by default. For me, (on a 1280x800 display), the zoom set to 27%, meaning that the page occupies only a small part of the workspace. It would be better if Inkscape zooms to page or drawing by default, rather than an arbitrarily large area.

I will upload a screenshot shortly.

Reverting status change - it is unclear where the default settings come from (the default template seems to be bypassed), nor decided whether and how Inkscape should implement a template system for different imported formats.

About the screenshot attached in comment #4: inkscape normally doesn't open fullscreen with the EPS file - the content is zoomed to fit a smaller (default-sized?) window, see attached screenshot [1] with current trunk.

Does it help if you toggle on the sticky zoom (upper right corner of the canvas, or 'Inkscape Preferences > Windows > Miscellaneous: [x] Zoom when window is resized) and reopen the EPS file in a new window?

[1] note that current trunk versions and 0.48.x set the page size to the bbox of the imported EPS file, and no longer to the default paper size used by Ghostscript.

Yes, that has "fixed" it... although I see now that there never was a problem! The EPS was opening with the window zoomed to fit the page. When I maximised the window, it was not scaling accordingly.

I'm happy to close this as invalid, assuming that you don't see a genuine bug here.

I don't see it as bug, but as there has been a similar request earlier to be able to use a kind of template when importing supported (but not native) file types (allowing to set initial zoom level, window size, snap settings... i.e. whatever settings are stored within an Inkscape SVG file), I assume it is a valid feature request (but unclear to me if it could be implemented using the current template system).

Maybe we could link it as duplicate to bug #333953 or at least add a comment there?

I'm just double checking with Ryo on the Debian tracker that "sticky zoom" fixes the problem for him too. Assuming it does, I'll close the bug in Debian and mark this as a duplicate of bug #333953 as you suggest.
