Bug Description

I am on Windows 7 and have tried saving my large banner created as an .svg file.
I select Save as and chose both .ps and .eps file choices and the software crashes
after creating part of the page (my banner is quitely graphically intense with a background
stretched for the enter length and width of (288 inches by 24 inches). I also
have lots of lines and boxes and text on the banner as it is a genealogy chart.
It would be great if these actually worked completely it would save me tons of headaches
as the printing options don't work as well, I get a small portion (supposedly 8.5 x 11 to print).
So I submitted a bug on this as well. I needed to be able to create large eps/ps and print
them and I would love to be able to do this with inkscape 0.48.

I was able to saveAs a .pdf file and it saved the full size, but, it would be nice if Inkscape could support later PDF versions
such as 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, etc....

This depends on what cairo (used for PDF/PS/EPS export in Inkscape) supports (see bug #664335). The windows port of Inkscape 0.48 uses cairo 1.8.8.

Can you try to get Inkscape's console messages when it crashes using the command line wrapper from <http://kaioa.com/node/63> or attach the SVG (as well as any linked bitmap images) here so that we can try to reproduce the crash?

Doesn't seem related to page size: attached sample drawing (document page size: 288x24 inches) exports without issues to PDF/PS/EPS
(testing with Inkscape 0.48 and 0.48+devel r9841 on OS X 10.5.8)

@khovorka , could you attach the svg file that is causing the problem, or has it already been resolved?

Sorry this took a while to finally get to to read.
Attached is the .svg file mentioned and which I need to work
with regularly.

Sincerely,

thank you for the file, unfortunately, I was not able to load it due to lack of memory. The File preview worked fine, but during the load Inkscape crashed at 1 GB memory usage with the attached error msg.

okay, after a clean reboot, I was able to load it and save it as a .ps file (Windows XP and Inkscape 0.48). No unexpected errors were encountered, but the .ps file is 8 MB, so it is too large to attach here.

Failure to save 'Geller.svg' as PS file reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.1 and 0.48+devel r10325 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (i386) with cairo 1.10.2.

The SVG file seems to originate from an imported PS file (based on the many nested layer transforms, and clipped groups (e.g. for the border frames). The size of the bitmap in the background doesn't seem to matter (saving a copy as PS also fails after deleting the embedded bitmap).

Possibly trying to reduce the complexity (nested levels of groups with complex transforms), as well as releasing unneeded clips might possibly help with saving as PS (Note: IMHO Inkscape is not yet well suited to roundtrip-edit other vector formats without encountering issues at some point due to the repeated conversions between the different file formats (PS > SVG > PS) using different libraries (poppler, cairo). If imported PS files are to be used as groundwork for an Inkscape drawing, I'd recommend to ungroup and strip the content down to the essential paths and text objects (as far as possible), add new layers and structure the drawing according to content on several layer levels).

The error seems to occur in the cairo library (Inkscape itself usually is more verbose with warnings and console messages).

When saving as PS failed, Inkscape only displayed the dialog notifying about the failure, but no other related console messages (warnings or errors).
