I can reproduce a delayed opening of the main window and the 'Fill&Stroke' and 'Align and Distrbute' dialog when I use a custom theme for Inkscape that has a custom size set for large toolbar icons: e.g.

 gtk-icon-sizes = "gtk-large-toolbar=20,20"

Rescaling the toolbox icons (native size: 24x24px) noticeable delays opening the main window, the same happens for the icons in the 'Stroke style' tab of the 'Fill&Stroke' dialog and all icons in the 'Align&Distribute' dialog - but only once in the current Inkscape process. Later reopening of the dialogs is instantaneous because now the icons have been cached and no more slowdowns are experienced.

Can you test using different themes with default button sizes if the slowdown persists?

tested on OS X 10.5.8, MacBookPro, Intel C2D 2.4 GHz, 2GB RAM
- Inkscape 0.46, 0.47 and 0.47+devel r9495
- the default GTK+ theme (`Raleigh') (Inkscape 0.46, 0.47)
- the Clearlooks theme included in gtk-engines 2.18.5 (0.47+devel)
and a custom gtkrc file which explicitly sets a smaller icon size for large toolbars:
   gtk-icon-sizes = "gtk-large-toolbar=20,20"

With Inkscape 0.47 and 0.47+devel I do experience a noticeable delay, but never near 30-40 seconds (more between 2-6 sec).

Not reproduced with Inkscape 0.46 using the same settings (default GTK+ theme ('Raleigh'), smaller icon size for large toolbars)

@Kris - I am not sure about the duplicate status - this problem manifests differently as you can read on the linked InkscapeForum topic (massive delay when maximizing the main window and when opening two of the dialogs - Align and Distribute, Fill and Stroke) besides overall slowness when drawing or node-editing simple designs (no filters involved).

As the reporter told in e-mail, it could be related to open source ATi drivers used on both the netbook and desktop computer, since the issue appears to happen independent of the amount of RAM.

Bug #522767 OTOH is about time required to start Inkscape 0.47 compared to 0.46.

This report (#589102) is possibly more related to bug #453560 “inkscape draws very slowly and feels unresponsive” than to bug #522767 “performance 0.47 vs. 0.46”, but further input by the bug reporter would be helpful.

@suv: I added the duplicate status, because it refers to starting Inkscape, which is also exactly part of bug #522767 in my opinion. But feel free to change the duplicate status, you have much more experience in tracking this stuff than me.
