inkscape draws very slowly and feels unresponsive

Binary package hint: inkscape

I am finding inkscape almost impossible to use due to its slowness. whenever the canvas is changed it takes at least ½ a second, sometimes several seconds to redraw.
I've removed ~/.inkscape and ~/.config/inkscape completely, which made no difference.

Let me know if there is any more information I can provide to help debug this.

In my xorg.conf is a relatively good workaround for this bug, inkscape performance improves (however performance of some other apps such as gnome-do docky drops).

The computer on which I experienced the bug has since died, so I can't confirm either way whether the issue is fixed in Lucid.

It is working fine on my current computer but I don't think that's relevant because it's new and has a much newer graphics card.
