not reproduced with Inkscape 0.47+devel r9300 on OS X 10.5.8:
double-clicking a path in the node-editor inserts a node as expected.
Please provide more information about platform and bzr revision. Can you narrow it down to a certain revision or a range of revisions (i.e. worked in r92xx, no longer works in r92yy)?
Can you check if the path was drawn in 'Spiro' mode / has the 'Spiro spline' path effect applied? (in this case you have to turn on 'Show the outline of the path' in the node tool and double-click on the highlighted outline, not on the representation of the spiro spline, to add a node)
