Thanks for the tip, JazzyNico! Both 'jolly-royal.svg' and 'Ancient Egyptian.svg' open without error in Inkscape 0.46+devel r22531 after gunzipping them twice ;-) and don't show any obvious rendering errors like missing fonts or paths on OS X 10.5.8.
