Bug Description

As claimed in Bug #165716 by Buliabyak, that issue was fixed in CVS in 2005 (!)
But it stand still at the present moment.

System - WinXP (later I'll check it on Ubu9.04)
Inkscape version - 0.47dev
Layouts - Russian and Latin

It is really annoying thing, especially when russian (cyrillic) layout is used. User forced to jump up and down with layouts switch.

p.s. I thought this is kinda of GTK+ issues - but GIMP works just fine in both layouts.

Please confirm or clarify this problem! thanks

Could you give two or three examples what shortcuts fail with the localized (Russian) keyboard layouts?
Can the shortcuts that fail be re-mapped using a local 'share/keys/default.xml' keybindings file or are these actions that bypass the verbs system (like '[,]' for rotating shapes and nodes)?
Do you mean issues like recently discussed in bug #266913 (Double 'Shift' modifier impossible)?

other possibly related bugs:
Bug #165716 “keyboard shortcuts don't work with foreign keyboard layouts”
Bug #165755 “keys inaccessible with localized/platform-specific keyboards”
Bug #167906 “"Alt" keycodes used twice in german translation”
Bug #168887 “german keyboard: path editing keys with AltGr don't work”
Bug #178738 “Path Effects shortcut mixed with Division (Shift+Ctrl+7)”
Bug #181393 “View shortcuts don't work on french keyboard”

Just checked the issue on Ubuntu 9.04. All works great. So that is only
Windows bug.

Well - examples are endless - all of shortcuts. It cannot be remapped as far
as I try. When I try to add some cyrillic letters for some action (Open
Ctrl+O and Ctrl+Щ) Inkscape going mad. the context menu (which appear with
RMB click on draw area) lost all letters. I mean that stay only icons, all
strings where only words are (for example Object propeties, Set clip) -
they're gone away completely.

Tomorrow I'll check - maybe when I edit keys/defaults.xml there was not set
UTF. Maybe cause in that.

About possibly related bugs. Yes, like I wrote in beginning of the bug it is
completely double bug# 165716 (I subscribed Bulia Byak so). The only reason
I file that bug - because original is closed, but issue not eliminated, at
least on Win platform (look on the date and content of last comment in
#165716).

uff. so many letters. I hope I clear point the problem?

thank you ~suv for deep investigation :)

Ctrl + Z = Undo
Ctrl + Я = No reaction.

I can`t call this a bug as the program is designed to react to "Ctrl + Z" key press for undo. However, it would be nice if it will recognize the appropriate combinations involving the Russian characters.

This is an ugly fix:

* Go to Text Entry and remove the keyboard change shortcut and uncheck Show current input source in the menu bar
* Go to Language Support and set the Keyboard Input Method System to none
* Open a terminal and do a sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
* Choose the switch shortcut you like from the list

The indicator is now useless as it does not show the correct layout, but layouts do switch and the shortcuts work in both languages

Please note: this inkscape report (bug #458072) tracks a bug specific to the Windows backend of GTK+. It does _not_ apply to Inkscape on Ubuntu (regressions with different layouts failing on linux are tracked e.g. in bug #1226962).

Upstream GTK+ bug (for Windows backend):

Keyboard shortcuts don't work!!! Not only letter-symbol shortcuts (like "D") but also such common shortcuts like "CTRL+Z" or "CTRL+Y". Without shortcuts workflow is true hell!!!!
