this is a somewhat clumsy workaround but I believe it works : for the text in question, select the master text, choose the menu item Path -> Object to Path. Then export, and you don't need to specify 'Convert Text to Paths', because it has already been done. The resulting .ps file is smaller and appears to be consistent in quality.
