I can't understand the problem you are having with importing EPS files into LaTeX. I've tested the EPS export with both LaTeX and OpenOffice. I get correct results if the bounding box is tight. If I make the bounding box the size of the page the figure is mostly empty space with a tiny drawing in the middle.
I'm attaching my LaTeX test case.
