On my system - Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" running GNOME - I get an entry in my window list bar (a.k.a. task bar) while inkscape is loading to indicate that it is still initializing. It consistently takes about 11 seconds to open a new blank document. I believe that this feature of my operating system is called "startup notification" (http://library.gnome.org/devel/integration-guide/stable/startup-notification.html.en).

Maybe the startup notification should be made more prominent if the application has failed to show a window after three seconds? I don't know what normally happens on other platforms but perhaps something similar would be possible.
