Bug Description

Hi,

just a note that it's WAY too hard to request features! You may also want to consider not having it dump you in a defect tracking tool - the features probably have to be eye-balled anyway... I would suggest a web form.

I think the "request a feature" shouldn't be a separate link as it confuses people when they arrive to the bug tracker. Perhaps something like "Report a bug/Request a feature" as one link would be better.

What do you think is wrong with the tracker? You can report a bug to Launchpad about what you think is wrong so they can fix it.
btw the bug tracker is in a form of a web form :)

I'm not a developer but as far as I can tell having wishlists together with bugs fits well into the way Inkscape is being developed. Inkscape is a volunteer based project, there aren't many group discussions about what feature should be implemented, developers work on areas they want to, usually something they have an interest in personally. So when a developer decides to work on something it doesn't make much difference if the label on the request is a bug or a wishlist.

Having wishlists in the tracker form is very useful because people can search past requests, there are many that repeat, and add to them instead of constantly reporting new ones.

The way it works now is very convenient. Sometimes you don't know if a behavior is due to a bug or a missing feature. Thus it's possible to later choose a bug importance or mark it "Wishlist". One improvement that can be done is changing the tab and button in the lauchpad UI. But it's not part of Inkscape project.

Changed in inkscape:
importance: Undecided → Wishlist

JazzyNico,

If you want to try the change out dev.launchpad.net allow to download alter and if it works well sent to the developers we might get it in, and change it make it our wish item for launchpad.

Yes, it's a very good thing we can now play with it.
But I've tried to compile it and there are *lots* of problems, mainly due to the specific environment the devs use (python 2.4, bugs in the install process, undocumented steps). But it's quite new and I'll try again later, and then send a patch.

I've filled the following Launchpad bug:
[Bug #444491] Replace "Report a bug" with "Report a bug or wishlist"

Sadly, it has a "won't fix" status...

Proposing to close this report as 'Invalid' - the report is obsolete because it was based on the site navigation menu of the old website; the new website no longer has a direct link to the bug tracker titled 'Request Features'.

Proposals how to better support users visiting the new website with the intention to file a feature request (and whether or not feature requests should be handled in the regular bug tracker, or in a separate database maintained at inkscape.org) probably are better discussed on one of the related mailing lists (e.g. 'inkscape-docs').

This question has actually come up - Brynn said she found it difficult, too.

I think this should rather not be discussed in inkscape-docs, but in dev mailing list, the reason being that I believe it's the devs who should have the authority to decide if they want the features separate from the bugs (I personally wouldn't want that for a project where I'm a developer).

The text at inkscape.org would just need to be adapted (if a policy change is made). We'd only follow the dev's wishes, not the other way around.
