Bug Description

Using a Wacom 12WX with an iMac Core Duo Intel (+ Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse) in Inkscape. The eraser does not act as an eraser, it draws, although it works well in other graphics software.

What version of Inkscape are you using? Currently in our development version there is now an eraser tool. However, the automatic tool switching does not seem to be working correctly after the first switch on my Intuos 2 (which is why I am assigning to you JonCruz).

If you are using the last official released version 0.46 (or before), there was no eraser tool for it to utilize. If you are using a development version, there is an option in the Inkscape Preferences dialog under the Mouse section to "Switch tool based on tablet device".

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I am using version 0.46, but will look on the site for a development
version, if that is where they are to be found.

I will report back to you re tool switching.

Jackie.

It's nice to know about the "switch tool based on tablet device" setting, but since it's not in the Input Device dialog that configures other tablet options, it's likely to be missed. (I had no idea until reading this bug's thread.)

My recommendation: Eliminate the "Input Devices" dialog under the File Menu, and move all tablet configuration to a Mouse/Tablet section of the regular Preferences dialog. There's no valid reason why these should be separated, and a bunch of good reasons why they should be together.

@Jacqueline - does the tablet configuration and the tool switching (for the eraser tool) work for you with the current release version (Inkscape 0.47) on your iMac?

I'm new to Inkscape and am using the latest development version 0.48 r9716. I too have a Wacom graphics tablet and was pleasantly surprised in several other drawing packages that I after drawing away I could turn the pen upside down and use it as an eraser i.e. the software properly detected the pen orientation and acted accordingly. In Inkscape both ends of the pen act like the drawing end. If this could be made to work in the proper manner that would be fantastic :-).

Did you try the preference setting for tool switching?
'File > Inkscape Preferences > Mouse > [x] Switch tool based on tablet device'
(worked for me)

I'm on a fresh install of Precise. With my Wacom Graphire4 6x8, in Gimp it will switch tools depending on which end of the pen I use.

In Inkscape, in the input devices dialog, it knows which end of the pen is in proximity to the tablet when I use it in the test area. The eraser end lights up when the eraser is there, and the pen end lights up when the pen is.

I have the option set to have it switch tools... but it does not switch tools.

Inkscape 0.48.3.1 r9886 in Ubuntu 12.10 on a Thinkpad X220 with a Bamboo Pen & Touch (CTH-470).
In Gimp the switching of pen/eraser works fine.
In Inkscape it does not. The eraser acts still as a pen.
The tablet is configured in the input device dialogue and I also set the tool switching checkbox in the mouse section of the configuration. (And I have to agree that I would like to have these two config options in one place and not in two.)
