Bug Description

The TrueType pixel font called SuperText, which can be found at http://www.dafont.com/supertext.font, doesn't display, but is substituted by Bitstream Vera Sans. Attempts have been made to verify and regenerate the font as a TrueType font with FontForge, but font still does not display.
Inkscape 0.45, MacOS 10.4

Same here with Inkscape devel on 10.5.2. The font is correctly
recognized, shows up in the text and font palette, the preview is OK
but it is not displayed on canvas.

Reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.4 and current trunk (r12170) on OS X 10.7.4

The exact font name of the attached TTF file as initially shown in Inkscape's font selector is "Supertext 03 Bold", but Inkscape drops the leading '0' (zero) from the '03' substring the font name when applying it to a text, and cannot find the font anymore (displays warning about font not found).

The same workaround as described in
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/209345/comments/4>
applies here too (see attached file: font style for duplicated bottom text object edited in external editor, inserting missing zeros, and adding quotes).

Likely the same as tracked in
- Bug #271290 "Cannot select a font with leading zeroes in name properly”
  <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/271290>

Proposing to link as duplicate to bug #271290 (despite newer than this one, it describes the problem in the summary, and has been referenced by in comments of other reports, too).

Don't hesitate to revert the duplicate status if you think it's a different issue.
