Loucypher: Good on you for testing! The page size patch actually is more to do with stopping non-printing by correcting the default page size setting. Before this patch, sometimes it would say it was printing and then give no output at all. See here - https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/179988/comments/66 - maybe I should have referred to it as the "Default Pagesize Patch". Keep chipping away.

On another note, I've realised that doing an ASCII compare might not give the right results for the above ps files, but they are exactly the same size. I have also been wondering how printer driver dependent the ps output is. It is a PS3 printer driver, and PS3 must also be able to contain raster images, however the files don't seem to change much if I set it to full ascii output, and set compression settings to none.
