Bug Description

When trying to add a gradient node on canvas by double-clicking, and there is an overlaid object with some gradient, the topmost object gets edited instead of the node addition on the selected object.

See the following demo:
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/demos/inkscape-canvas-gradient-bug.ogg

The bottom circular object is selected, having a radial gradient. Cursor shows a + sign showing that double clicking on the gradient will add a node, yet linear fill gradient is set on the checkmark object above.

This behavior is there sometime since the introduction of the awesome canvas editing.

I can confirm this on WinXP and fedora 7, the top object gradient gets selected instead of the bottom one as expected.

while this is definitely a bug, it's more an annoyance than something that should delay the release, so I'm dropping the milestone.

Also when you create a new stop it isn't selected. It should be stay selected, so you can easily click on a swatch and change its color immediately.
When you create a new stop in a gradient is because you want to add a new swatch or because you want to move that stop to compress/expand the gradient, so it doesn't much make sense to have to click again on it to make it active.

As Bryce pointed out, they are more annoyances than bugs, but they break the workflow and can led to loose defined styles mistakenly.

I'm adding this comment and changing the summary because I think they are two aspects of a same issue, which is related to the focus strategies of the gradient tool.
Please break this report in two if you think it's worth.

summary: - on-canvas gradient editor breaks adding a node

Should be fixed by commit to trunk r11136.

FYI Can also get the same result by holding the Ctrl key while double-clicking to add the new stop to the correct gradient in the current Inkscape version.
