Yes, that sound's like a good approach for most cases. In the unlikely case Inkscape does not start at all due to broken preferences (not very common) we can consider adding these bits later.

Well, I already considered it "softened" enough (I guess most developers and other people familiar with how software development works will actually see the winking eye I implied), but your concerns show how differently people interpret these thing. Feel free to soften it if you know a way, but the "hard truth" is that a couple of reports always go unanswered for a lot of different reasons (lack of time, nobody able to reproduce, report just too hard to understand, so exotic set-up nobody can even try to confirm, etc.).
