Object/Clip/Set in Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06) doesn't seem to work as described in an online tutorial.
I saw where a rectangle was used to mask over a letter to give the letter a shadow.
There were three parts to the effect, an original letter that was made into a path and ungrouped, a rectangle larger than the letter to act as a movable offset and a duplicate of the letter to interact with the rectangle.
The goal was to have the mask and the sacrificial duplicate letter resolve to just the shadow on the original letter.
When it comes to using the overlay to shadow something it seems to depend on whether the mask is layered above or below the sacrificial copy of the object to be shadowed.
The visible part of the mask is inside the boundary of the sacrificial letter and is retained if the mask is BELOW the sacrificial letter and the sacrificial lower letter goes away.
The blur shadow is to the inside of the letter and the color of the shadow is the color of the rectangle mask.
However, in this case the original perimeter of the larger mask object defines the boundary of the mask object and not the visible part of the original letter.
If the mask is ABOVE the sacrificial duplicate letter the overall mask object boundary is reduced to the size of the letter.
The offset trim is the color of the sacrificial duplicate letter and the trim blurs outward and not inward.
The layering difference might be desirable to produce either an outside blur or an inside blur but the fact that in the case where the the boundary of the mask doesn't reduce to the size of the letter even though the outer visible part of the mask is gone is a problem.
When selecting everything, like with ctrl/a, the original perimeter of the rectangle mask is visible with a dashed line even though it is clear of color from the letter boundary outward and when saving the image this goofs up the image size and the image content.
The mask does not shrink wrap to the remaining object's size.
I came across this while researching a different issue. I'm not sure why additional information has not been requested here. And I'm not really a bug manager either.
But at a very minimum, we need a link to the tutorial. We need to know specifically which part of the tutorial you're concerned with. If it's a video, give us the time around when the issue is covered. If it's a text tutorial, give us the direct quote.
If you can reproduce this problem, please tell us the specific steps. Also, if possible, please provide a test SVG file.
If you're not really sure if this is a bug or not, please use either the User Community mailing list, or IRC, or post the problem in a forum, where we can help you troubleshoot. You can find links for all those things here: https:/ /inkscape. org/en/ community/
And finally, please tell us your operating system.
