Bug Description

When using the text editor in Windows 7, on different files, occasionally the underscore button makes letters entirely disappear. On another document the text editor lost the ability to highlight individual letters, clicking and dragging merely created a new text box over the existing letter.

I assume you're facing two different issues here:

This sounds like an overflow issue. I suspect the boundaries of the text box are colored red? This indicates that the text does not fix into the given size (otherwise the boundaries are colored blue). Have you tried to rescale the text box with the handle in the lower right? It should make your text appear again "magically".

This is likely some slightly suboptimal selection behavior. Make sure you hover over a character (not in between characters or in between lines!) when selecting. The mouse cursor should then turn into a caret (if it's instead a crosshair with a small A - the default of the text tool - it will create a new text element).

The subscript issue: the box didn't turn red and I tried resizing it.

Text selecting issue: The standard text cursor (I-beam pointer) did not appear which meant I couldn't select any letters (optimally or suboptimally). It also occurred consistently on the same document until I closed it and reopened it.

Ah, important difference! So you're using the subscript button and are not trying to type underscore characters as stated in the initial post?

In this case this is likely the same cause as bug #1674996.
