Indeed that would be a really important feature. E.g. my usual usecase is:
* Draw something on paper
* Scan
* Import in Inkscape
* Edit
After importing, my drawing is in one whole big path, even if it contains several different objects (a person, a tree, a chair, etc). Let's say that I just want to simplify the path of the tree, to make it smoother. If I select the nodes in the tree and then Simplify, the whole drawing gets simplified, and with a huge threshold.
