Dithers, I often use the method you described to select similar objects so I can say with knowledge that it is really not straightforward: sometimes I prefer selecting objects by hand rather than going through it (if they are not so many).
Ok, it works but everyone that used other programs that give this option probably don't feel it's enough. Sure it's much more flexible because you can do whichever filtering you need, but for quick, simple, often used selections it's too heavy.
So, let's say that what's asked is not implemented in Inkscape yet, but if really needed there is a workaround to do something similar.
