Import SVG embedded in other XML

I put this in the Category: Other because strangely
there is no Import category but both Saving and Export
are listed.

it would be very useful to be able to point Inkscape at
any XML document and have it import whatever SVG is
contained therein.

I'm particularly interested in this because I would
like to be able to directly reuse shapes I (and others)
have created for Dia. The dia .shape file format is
largely SVG with some extra information for connection
points and other things.

Thank you for taking the time to report this feature request and helping to make Inkscape better. You requested this feature a long while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering; is this still on your wishlist? Can you try with latest Inkscape release and see if recent improvements have obsoleted your request? Thanks in advance.

I still believe it would be very useful if Inkscape could import files that may not be entirely SVG but do contain SVG parts within them, things such as XHTML pages for example.

No this hasn't been fixed in 0.45 the most recent stable release. I'm fairly sure it hasn't been addressed in the 0.46 either but I'll wait for that to be released.
