|03:31| < jaddison> aha! this link (http://inkscape-forum.andreas-s.net/topic/104594) helped. when you apply transformations on paths, they can't be grouped. you need to ungroup them, transform (rotate, for eg), regroup them and THEN apply the perspective. that seemed to work for my simple text example - perhaps not for my more complex boxshot, but we'll see.
|03:34| < jaddison> or alternatively, transform the group of paths (which sets the transform attribute on the group in the xml editor), ungroup it (which applies the transform to individual paths within the group) and then regroup it (in order to apply the perspective). quirky, but neat.
