What I usally do as a workarround is.

Fill the object or text with the desired pattern.
set a custom background of the obj. or tekst by duplicating it and moving it to the back of the tekst.
note. background can also be a part of the previous created pattern.

However this approach make take some time if the patterns get more complex.
