Erratic node tool behavior also reproduced with patched trunk ( lp:inkscape r15110 + fix-bug-1621234.v5.patch ) on Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS as described.
Conditions to reproduce consistently:
- new document based on default template (SVG user unit corresponds to 1 mm)
- 'Path Effects' editor opened first
- path drawn with bezier tool using 'Ellipse' shape
- node tool used to drag a selected node without de- and re-selecting the path just drawn with bezier tool in-between
Not further investigated: has current (last used) style any affect on the initial width of the 'Ellipse' shape? IIRC it does affect the powerstroke LPE used for the triangular shapes.
