Bug Description

V0.91
W8.1
64 bit

Please see the posts at the following link:

ISSUE:

PNGs properly saved and exported from V 0.91 with all Alpha channels set to 0 and then uploaded to Shopify repeatedly show with no transparency / black abstract colouring.

PNG as test file from http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/File-Export.html in V 0.47 or 0.48 when uploaded to Shopify appears normal with full transparency / no corruption.

When above test file is saved, opened in V 0.91, then saved and exported as a PNG with all Alphas at 0, and is then uploaded to Shopify as a V 0.91 file, all transparency is lost / black abstract colouring appears.

FINDINGS

Inkscape V 0.91 PNG files uploaded to Shopify are not transparent. Large number of other postings on other forums strongly suggest problem applies to many other sites.

CONCLUSION

Bug exists in V 0.91 causing loss of transparency with PNGs when uploaded to numerous websites especially Shopify; fully tested on Shopify; proof being that earlier version test file works fine, but when converted to a V 0.91 file, corruption appears.

James, could you also download and attach the modified png from the shopify website? (not a screenshot, the actual image file - right-click on it and choose to save the image).

Requested file attached.

Note the only file format save option is JPG. Perhaps a conversion error
one might think. But:

1) Shopify Forum Expert states as per last post in link to Inkscape post
that Shopify does not convert images upon upload; and,

2) All other PNGs not created with Inkscape that were uploaded to same site
had no loss of transaparency or corruption, and after upload, only have JPG
as the file format option under "Save Image As . . . "

Hope this helps - James

In that case, it probably *is* a jpg. To do a final verification, please do this in your browser:

- right-click on the image
- select 'show graphic info' in the context menu
- Does it still say it's a jpg? Then it *is* a jpg.

What I think is that the Shopify person's comment was maybe referring to another picture size, not to this thumbnail size.

When they resize, they will probably use the jpg format, which, because of the mentioned transparency bug in Inkscape (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1430716), converts to a black background instead of white.

You are correct. The thumbnail version upon upload is indeed a JPG. Upon
saving and displaying on web page, it shows as being converted back into a
PNG. Screen capture attached to document that JPG is indeed the file type.
Many thanks for your fast replies. All the best with this bug.

Last 2 cents: I see that the bug has an undecided to medium priority. My
vote is for a higher priority in that for sites that use JPG thumbnail
previews for images, Inkscape V0.91 PNGs cannot be used, meaning users must
use another program. If my thinking is wrong, give a shout please; if not,
many thanks - James

With regards to the solution of the problem, I'm marking this as a duplicate of the known linked opacity bug.
