When one stop of the gradient is changed - colour, alpha, then the "Opacity" slider is changed as well, however it is the same opacity slider used to change opacity of the object, when not in gradient editing mode. Additionally "Blur" slider is still present, which definitely changes the blur of the object. This creates mess in interface, where no dedicated gradient editing dialog is present.
