It is (though not nicely, currently only via message to stderr) - at least during development ("current state") it's a feature I'd certainly not shy away from using, when writing extensions. A different solution of course would be to not use an extension script at all but to implement it internally (including custom dialog), similar to the font substitution checking on document load.

Are you saying that Inkscape not only updates the version string but also modifies page size, page size units and document units of an existing document during load, before any extension can be run? (I'm aware of the changes to the version string - I did not include it for exactly that reason).

(I'll bow out of the discussion here to avoid further expanding the wishlist. This discussion imvho was moved away from the public mailing list into the rather hidden (and flat) comments section of the bug tracker rather quickly.)
