as the wish list expands with new ideas, I think you will soon encounter limitations of the Python script that cannot be fixed. The scripts are not interactive. As far as I know, the sequence of events is that the .inx file reads past data from the Prefs file, displays it, and then loads the Python code. The Python code is capable of interrogating the file in detail, but it is not capable of displaying any of this info to the user. So it is not feasible to show the user what the previous Inkscape rev number was, or what the previous doc file size, or units, was.
