I can't fully confirm this: based on local tests [1], the reported issue seems to depend on versions of external libraries, independent of Inkscape:
- reproduced with up-to-date stable versions of fontconfig/pango/freetype with Inkscape stable (0.48.5) and trunk (0.91pre2 r13534),
- not reproduced with same inkscape versions (stable 0.48.5, trunk r13534) but older versions of all dependencies

[1] all test done on OS X 10.7.5, with separate prefixes (MacPorts trees) for the dependent libraries.
