1st off, the first one is how I am opening students files currently. I have been saving it to a folder, then with Inkscape open, going in and choosing Open and then opening it in from that folder. I have had no problems with that way.

Yes I know that the file has been unzipped and I know which file I've stored it. Please let me explain further, to help you understand. I have taught Inkscape for 3 years now in the Digital Arts class. Most semesters I teach it and one or two other classes. I've typically had about 150 or so students. This semester I have 320. I teach them how to zip files, extract files, deal with tech issues they have. My background before this includes 3 years working the help desk at Northern Arizona University.

Second, I have no problem opening it in IE.

This is a specific problem with any saved .svg that I try to open from a folder or zipped file saved on my computer, or when I try to open it through our dropbox. It will not open without coming up with that error any time I try to double click on it, right click and open, stand on my head and shout at it (sorry I thought that one was funny) or anything else, except for me having Inkscape open, going to File and Open and then choosing it from there.

Lastly, when I create a new .svg it does the same thing. I can open with Inkscape open only, but not by double clicking on the file in the folder, desktop and wherever I save it.

Typically, dear tech person, I click on an attachment in my online class's dropbox, open the zipped folder and double click on the file and it opens in Inkscape. I grade the lovely drawing and move on to the next assignment. This new glitch has added me having to save and extract the files, which costs me time. Seriously, it has almost doubled the time it takes me to grade anything. When you multiply that by 320 students, I want to bang my head on a desk.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the newest version of Inkscape and an older version.

I've also checked with one of my co-teachers who is a coder and has taught this course with me. She downloaded the newest version in June, she has no problems. I redownloaded mine about the first week of school sometime between 8-8 and 8-11 (I had a student claim Inkscape gave him a virus, which I seriously doubted, so I ran virus protection, backed up my computer, deleted Inkscape, reinstalled it, ran virus protection again and did this three times to be sure.) and this is about when this started for me. No, I haven't downloaded any other programs in that time period. Yes, I have run virus protection since. What we noticed in trying to troubleshoot this, is that in her Program File for Inkscape, we have the same drivers (we unhid files) but the Uninstall Text Document in hers is about 3 times the size of mine. This happens whether I download the new version or 0.47-3, which leads me to believe that somehow between June and the second week in August, someone changed something. My friend said when she was on Launch Pad she saw other users saying that they had this problem, but there weren't any solutions posted. I didn't see them, so I can't tell you where they were. I also sent the some of the same files I had problems opening to my co-teacher and she opened them fine.

try opening Inkscape with no file selected, then use File->Open and browse to the directory where your svg file is located. This is just to confirm that the svg file has been unzipped and to confirm that you know which directory you stored it in. Failing that, browse to where your svg file is, and do a right click and choose the option "Open With Internet Explorer" to confirm that the file opens normally. Failing that, try creating an svg file from scratch in Inkscape and save it and try to reload it as above.

Title:
Zipped Inkscape files won't open in folders

Status in Inkscape: A Vector Drawing Tool:
  New

Bug description:
Please, please help! I'm an online teacher at AZVA and I teach
Inkscape for Digital Arts. The problem I am having is that when I go
to open zipped files my students send me with their Inkscape drawings,
it says I have to re-download Inkscape. I've now done this more than
a dozen times. I have also tried running it as an administrator,
selecting for it not to save preferences, all sorts of variations.

String of what happens: I try to click on the Inkscape file in any
zipped folder, whether from the dropbox or on my own computer,
Inkscape starts to open, but then asks me what my preferred language
is and then gives me the message: Previous installation detected at
  C:\Program Files (x86)\Inkscape. Required file Uninstall.dat is
missing. It is highly recommended to select an empty directory and
  perform a fresh installation.

My friend and I compared our Inkscape program files and the Uninstall
text document is about the third of the size of the one she downloaded
  in June.
