Font not changing

I am using inkscape for OSX SnowLeopard 10.6.8 - I have downloaded the latest version so should have all the updates.
I am trying to check out different fonts on a line of text and they are not changing - reverting instead to 'sans'.

Please provide more details about the fonts you tried to apply but which were reverted to 'Sans' (e.g. font name as displayed in Inkscape, font file name, etc.) - are these fonts installed on the system (bitmap fonts for example don't work in Inkscape), or fonts you installed yourself?

Inkscape 0.48.2 for Mac OS X uses a rather default fontconfig file which also includes all fonts installed by X11/XQuartz (among them many bitmap fonts which cannot be used in Inkscape). Additionally, the fonts from /System/Library/Fonts are excluded - Helvetica, Lucida Grande and a few other regular OS X fonts thus are missing (AFAIK this is a legacy setting due to incompatibilities of older pango versions with fonts packages as *.dfont files).

Probably - one example is the font 'clean' - I assume it is one installed by inkscape/X11 as I have not seen it before on my system and have definitely not downloaded it myself.

Yes, fonts like 'Charter', 'Clean', Clearlyu' are X11 bitmap fonts which don't work in Inkscape.

Linking as duplicate to bug #714859 - please add a comment and revert the duplicate status if you disagree and think these are different issues which need to be tracked separately.
