Reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.3.1 and 0.48.4 (X11- as well as Quartz backend), but not with current trunk (r12183) on OS X 10.7.4 (64bit).

Steps:
1) launch inkscape (default prefs), new document
2) draw an ellipse (not a circle!)
3) 'Shift+Ctrl+LMB click' on one of the two square ellipse knots
-> crash

Not reproduced with any tested version (stable, trunk) and either backend of GTK+ on OS X 10.7.4 (X11, Quartz) - likely a different issue than originally reported (could be bug #1081108).

Since you already drew your conclusions (blaming Ubuntu's custom scrollbars), I'm not going to further triage the report for project 'Inkscape': There are no overlay scrollbars on OS X in play, yet the crash as originally reported is reproducible with latest stable versions (0.48.3.1, 0.48.4), using either available backend of GTK+ on OS X (X11, Quartz). It no longer occurs with current trunk builds -> wrt to Inkscape, a fix has already been committed.

Note NOT taken: The project 'Inkscape' (for which this report was originally filed) has nothing to do with Canonical's design decisions for Ubuntu/Unity.
