I'm having the same issue - installing broadcom driver or nvidia driver....

Two separate (and very fresh) 10.04 USB installs are giving the same results. pkgs won't install.

here's the output:

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic
cp: cannot stat `/vmlinuz': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing initramfs-tools (--configure):

I think this is caused by the link to vmlinuz which, in a USB install, is a broken link. See bug #557023.

I fixed this by recreating the link as follows:

sudo rm /vmlinuz

sudo ln -s /cdrom/casper/vmlinuz vmlinuz

Then the installs were fine.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The version of update-initramfs that you likely have installed is unable to work on a persistent usb stick. You can resolve this issue by upgrading the version of casper on your system. This can be done via the commands:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install casper

Then performing the software update or installation that you were originally trying. If this does resolve your bug please set its status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!
