There is a workaround for the ugly icons too.
m17n uses the icons located in usr/share/m17n/icons/
In my case (Greek), it was "el-kbd.png".
You can substitute the m17n-icon with an icon of your liking. I have tried to use the default Unity icon located in /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-dark/status/22/ and it works even though the Unity icon is in svg format
Namely, I have renamed "indicator-keyboard-Gr.svg" to "el-kbd.png" and placed it in usr/share/m17n/icons/

I am not sure whether it works all the time. Please confirm
