Chris, I've used Ubuntu/Xubuntu on several other computers, including two laptops, three desktops, and never encountered this phenomenon.
The netbook is an ASUS eeePC 1000, and it's the weirdest quirk I've encountered. It also happens consistently through different versions of Ubuntu.
I wonder if this is a hardware issue, where somehow pressing ALT locks out the Shift key?
