In the upstream report A. Walton said: "The default is a more reasonable 64x64 after discussion on IRC. Closing." He marked the bug reported as Fix Released.

I'm not sure whether that size will be used for both thumbnails and icons, or just thumbnails, I'm waiting for an answer to that.
