I too think that this is a major usability issue. If you have other partitions on your hard drive, it is near to impossible for a normal user to get those partitions to show up in Nautilus.

I just happened to need to access an NTFS partition that is not registered in fstab. For me personally it's no problem to google and find out how to retrieve the UUID of my partition (I always forget that), then trying to find out the correct syntax for fstab so that I can actually read AND write the disk.

But I couldn't ever imagine a Windows-and-potential-Ubuntu-user to manage to access his Windows partitions this way.
