When you want to log in at startup and your password is "abc123" for example, verr num is not active so you need to press verr num or use shift and "123".
Verr num only activates when gnome is loaded.
It would be nice that verrnum activates at GDM so that we naturally type "abc123" with the keyboard at login.

There is no easy way to change this default behaviour.
