Ah, now here's something that might be of interest. I upgraded to Nautilus Elemental today, and the bug is gone: I can plug in an external storage device and drag-and-drop to it immediately without any additional clicks. Terrific!
This is Nautilus version 2.32.0, with embedded terminal and clutterflow.
