Okay, so since that way didn't work, here is my current Ubuntu version and browser version:

Ubuntu 15.04

Firefox 43.0

I want to point out, this issue has been present for all Firefox versions, and all Ubuntu versions since I reported this bug.

I noticed the root cause of this issue: There are html pages hosted at ubuntu.com, with "hard-coded" Google or Yahoo search boxes, which show up as a user's Firefox homepage based on whether they are using Google or Yahoo as their default search engine. However, any other default search engine choice besides "Google" or "Yahoo" yields the Google search box page.

If one views the html source code of these pages, the search box is indeed "hard-coded" to direct searches to only one search provider, which would be either Google or Yahoo.

the urls for my version of Ubuntu are:

http://start.ubuntu.com/15.04/Google/?sourceid=hp

http://start.ubuntu.com/15.04/Yahoo/?sourceid=hp

(and related pages. For example: http://start.ubuntu.com redirects to http://start.ubuntu.com/current/Google/ . . . and http://start.ubuntu.com/current/[any text here other than "Yahoo"] also redirects to http://start.ubuntu.com/current/Google/)
